According to a recent article, Oberlo has stated that 689 million users have now embraced TikTok, which made its debut in 2016.

But why TikTok? Surely, there are other more established platforms. What makes this one different?

Well, that might be due to TikTok’s original format: it’s a short-form video platform. It’s been said that people’s attention spans are shortening, so shorter videos are increasingly appealing.

And with shorter videos means that people can quickly move to the next video, thus keeping people on the platform longer.

(After all, if you knew that the next video was just a few seconds long…how long would you ultimately surf the platform?)

Anyway, TikTok, for the time being, is here to stay, and for those who want to brand themselves and share a message, it’s a worthy platform to consider.

So, how do you use TikTok to become an influencer?

Well, currently, I’m not on TikTok, so I can’t authentically say I’ve grown a following on that platform.

That said, I have been involved in digital marketing for a number of years, so if I were going to try to become an influencer on any platform, I’d follow these steps:

  1. Have values and know what they are. (I talked about that here.)
  2. Have a message.
  3. Do research (demographic and psychographic) to ensure that your audience is on TikTok.
  4. Create content that will appeal to your audience.
  5. With the repeated release of content (videos, in this case), the numbers of people who follow you should increase.

In summary, for aspiring influencers, TikTok is a platform to consider. Of course, if you really want to be a big influencer (or even just win exposure for your product/service), you want to be on as many platforms as possible.
