Google has updated its rich results content guidelines to better align with the overall Google merchant guidelines, effectively prohibiting rich results for products that are widely prohibited or regulated, or that can facilitate serious harm to oneself or others.

These include the following; weapons, recreational drugs, tobacco & vaping products, and gambling-related products.

“Don’t mark up content that promotes widely prohibited or regulated goods, services, or information that may facilitate serious and/or immediate or long-term harm to self or others. This includes content related to firearms & weapons, recreational drugs, tobacco & vaping products, and gambling-related products,” Google said.

According to Google, this policy applies to all types of rich result markup, including star ratings, prices, and availability information, among other things. This can have an effect on products with rich result structured data markup that is widely prohibited or regulated, or that can cause serious harm to oneself or others.

“This could include items such as fireworks, recreational drugs, and other products that can pose serious physical harm,” a Google spokesperson said in an interview with Search Engine Land.
