Timnit Gebru, who had been part of Google’s Ethical Artificial Intelligence Team, says her employment abruptly ended in 2020.

Gebru’s focus was on racial bias in AI algorithms. She was exploring ethical implications of AI technologies at Google when she was fired.

She isn’t the only AI ethicist that has been fired by Google. Margaret Mitchell was also fired in February 2021.

Gebru has been very outspoken about AI safety and the need for equality and diversity.

She took to Twitter to say the following, “We have “AI safety first” co.s bankrolled by Silicon Valley billionaires & BigTech, which keep on failing up. “AI safety first” co.s which proved they were quite the opposite, with offshoots to do the same thing with the same paradigm again, raising 100s of millions.

This can’t be counteracted without proactive investment into grassroots orgs struggling to stop harm from these companies to their communities, but can’t get a dime while those who got us here add insult to injury with $$$ for yet another all white team to work on ‘safety’.

This will be my message over & over again to anyone in government I talk to about regulation on AI, AI safety or whatever.”

She stated in an interview with Futuro360 that it is not convenient for large technology companies to have people who express the problems that occur with the manipulation of data on social networks.

“There are many examples of how social networks have been used to intimidate journalists and other people. As workers we need a way to tell the world what the problems are,”.
