It seems that the source of the problem is one of the bigger content delivery networks in the world, Akamai. The issue is currently being investigated.
A few minutes later they release a second tweet saying that they fixed the problem without getting into specifics as to the cause.
But they did follow up to report on what it wasn’t
However, looking at their own system status monitoring system, it seems the Edge DNS system is still experiencing issues at the time of this writing.
This is probably due to DNS propagation throughout the web and it’s expected to be fully operational in due time.

It’s too early to tell if this was a result of a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack or some other cause.
