From a busy week last week, it seems that things have died down this week. Looks like everyone is busy working on their sites that have been hit by the last core update, setting up a new gameplan with the release of Overviews, etc. Here are this week’s notable SEO news
Bing Search, including third-party search services powered by Bing such as DuckDuckGo, ChatGPT Search, Copilot, and more, experienced a 5-hour global outage that started around 1:30 AM ET on Thursday (May 23, 2024).
Services were restored around 6AM ET, however, some users had reported that it was not yet working for them.
Microsoft posted an update by 7:30 AM ET. As of writing, the root cause of the issue has not yet been determined.
WordPress 6.5 now supports adding the lastmod element in sitemaps files. This element helps search engines understand when content is new or updated and can help with crawling efficiency.
Google’s Gary Illyes posted in linked in:
“The lastmod element in sitemaps is a signal that can help crawlers figure out how often to crawl your pages.
If you’re on WordPress, since version 6.5, you have this field natively populated for you thanks to Pascal Birchler and the WordPress developer community. If you’re holding back on upgrading your WordPress installation, please bite the bullet and just do it (maybe once there are no plugin conflicts). Don’t be like Gary and still run a version 2*.”
If your site’s on WordPress, it might be a good idea to upgrade to the latest version to help your site get crawled more efficiently.
Google has announced in it’s Google Marketing Live 2024 that Ads are coming to AI Overviews. Relevant search and shopping ads will appear in sponsored sections in the Overview boxes. There is no need to do anything for existing Search, PerformanceMax, and Shopping campaigns as they are eligible.
