Microsoft’s global outage is all the news right now with Banks, Aviation, Telecoms, Media, and other businesses being affected. We expect some of those in SEO using the system has also been affected. This only goes to show how an outage in a tech key player can affect so many industries and companies.

This week’s news in the SEO space is all about core updates, cctlds, and SEORockstars 2024. Check them out below:

Is Another Core Update Coming Along Soon?

In the past year (2023), a total of 4 core updates have been released – the first one, also in March, while the succeeding one was launched in August. This has led some to think that the next core update this year will be coming soon.

Danny Sullivan, Google’s Search Liaison, commented on Search Engine Roundtable that they do not know exactly yet when the next core update will be. He expects that we’ll see one in the coming weeks because it fits with their general cycle but as for when precisely, it is just not known yet. Updates aren’t scheduled to a particular day as the ranking team makes changes, tests those, evaluates those, and eventually they get a launch date. According to him:

“We’d tell you when the next core update will be if we knew. But we don’t know exactly yet, that’s all. These aren’t scheduled to a particular day. The ranking team makes changes, tests those, evaluates those and eventually we get a launch date. There have been many times I could have said “Core update next week!” because everything was on track for that to happen, but then there’s a need to do a bit more work or other things that might cause a pushback. I would expect we’ll see one in the coming weeks, because that fits in with our general cycle. But precisely when, that’s just not known yet.”

Sites that have been affected by last year’s helpful content update and the core update last March are waiting for this next core update with the hopes that improvements they have made on their site would help them regain their lost rank and traffic. Hopefully, we’ll see some recoveries when it rolls out in the coming weeks.

Do Localized Domains Do Better In Search For Local Queries?

In this month’s episode of Google’s SEO Office Hours, someone asked if a .com.kr domain does better than .com domain when a user searches in Korean.

Gary responded that generally speaking, local domain names do better because Google Search promotes local content to users. However, it is not to say that a .com domain cannot do well. Generally though, a localized domain name has more benefit though not to much. If the language of a site matches the user’s query language, that has more impact than the domain itself.

If you have questions that you would like the Search team to answer, you could also submit it here. Note though that they just run though some answers and for a more detailed response, they usually refer back to their documentation or their help forums. So if you have questions and need clarifications, might as well just check the documentation or forums.
