Ranking volatility still continues throughout the week, which makes us wonder, is this the new normal now when it comes to search? Since a lot of the ranking systems are now running real-time, does that translate into continuous volatility? We can only wait to see if stability arrives in the coming weeks. Check out this week’s notable SEO news below:
The Google search team has released an SEO Made Easy episode about making sites load faster. In this episode, Martin Splitt of the search team provides actionable tips on getting sites to load faster.
To start, he states that Google always seeks to show the most relevant content even if the page experience is not the best. So page loading performance and core web vitals are not as important as how some people think they are, but they are not irrelevant. Nevertheless, it still helps to know a few quick tips to make sites faster for users.
JavaScript files are one of the most common sources of slow-loading files. The resources are often quite large and as they need to be parsed and executed, it takes browsers a while to process also. Reduce the use of JavaScript, considering techniques such as code splitting to only load necessary parts of the code for each page, and content hashing to maximize caching of the files.
Another tip is to avoid unnecessary redirects. Some redirects are required such as if you change domains or the site is restructured after a migration, this tip is primarily aimed at accidental redirects. This can be avoided by checking your internal links to make sure that they point to the new URL instead of the old one. This avoids having users go through extra roundtrips, delaying them from getting to the content.
The last tip is to optimize your images. The video provides resources to go through to help optimize images for faster-loading sites and a previous episode that talks about image optimization.
