In the Google SEO Office Hours last February 18, a user asked about clickthrough rate and if it can affect rankings. As a backgrounder, the user recently added web stories to her website and she has received a lot of impressions from them. However, the main issue she has encountered is that though impressions have increased, the click-through rates have lowered down. So, can a low clickthrough rate affect rank?

According to John Mueller, low clickthrough rates will not affect the rank of a site. If a site has a low click-through rate, it does not mean that they will rank the site lower. This is simply not how it works.

As for the web stories and the low click-through rate from it, Mueller advised looking at the web stories, how they work for the site, and what you are trying to achieve with your site. If the web stories are not working well, they maybe tweak them or find a different format to use.

Nevertheless, there is no cause for worry with regards to the performance of web stories and how it relates to ranking of the rest of the content on the site.

Mueller then mentioned how web stories and doing SEO with them can be quite tricky because there is very little text on them. If you are making use of them and getting impressions from them, then you are already doing some really good work.

If you have been wondering about clickthrough rates and how it can affect rank, then Mueller’s answer should put you at ease.
