Google has denied rumors that it will close its Stadia streaming service anytime soon. This follows months of no updates from the company, as well as the closure of its main development studios for original titles.
Someone recently asked Google on Twitter if it would be shutting down its Stadia service soon.
“Stadia is not shutting down. Rest assured we’re always working on bringing more great games to the platform and Stadia Pro. Let us know if you have other questions,” Stadia said.
The “Killed by Google” Twitter account was a major contributor to this rumor. While it was not official in any way, it did post some comments from a rumored regional Google manager who speculated the company was looking at a mid-September Stadia shutdown date.
A story from Kotaku from last year regarding the layoffs endured by Stadia Games and Entertainment makes it difficult to believe Google when they claim something. About 150 employees were let go for unknown reasons, including Jade Raymond, a former employee of Ubisoft and Assassin’s Creed.
There haven’t been any first-party games released on Google’s platform in the past 18 months. It is said that there haven’t been many additions to Stadia’s library of titles overall.
