Google Maps began offering an alternative way to navigate users’ cars from one location to another last year. Whereas most navigation apps optimize for the shortest travel time, Google Maps has begun to offer routes that are more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly, even defaulting to that route if the ETA is similar.
To that end, Google Maps’ most recent beta update, version 11.39, includes preparations for specifying the engine type of the vehicle they are currently driving. Google Maps will use this option, which includes gas, diesel, electric, and hybrid vehicles, to “tailor” their navigation to find what will “save you the most fuel or energy.”
Even after this feature is available, it does not appear that users will be required to select a specific type of engine. There will also be an option in the app’s settings to switch to a different engine type if necessary.
Furthermore, the said update of Google Maps is still in beta testing and will soon be able to the general public.
