Google announced modifications to address the requests of the lawmakers that abortion-related medical facilities will now be identified in Google Maps and Search.

Additionally, when someone searches for nearby abortion clinics, Google will only display verified facilities in the local search box.

Recently, lawmakers asked Google to remove anti-abortion clinics from search results and post a disclaimer next to search results for verified facilities in their letter.

Representative Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Senator Mark R. Warner (D-VA), among others, made the following claims; In places where abortion is prohibited, anti-abortion clinics accounted for 37% of Google Maps results and 11% of Google search results for “abortion clinic near me” and Anti-abortion facilities were included in 28% of Google advertising that appeared above search results.

The US legislators who wrote the letter to Google are pleased with the modifications made today.

“I welcome the changes that Google has announced today so that women seeking abortion services aren’t directed towards fake clinics that traffic in misinformation and don’t provide comprehensive health services. Importantly, this isn’t about silencing voices or restricting speech – it’s about returning search results that accurately address a user’s query and giving users information that is relevant to their searches” Warner said in her press release.
