Google’s initiative, Advanced Web Apps Fund encourages projects that make the web more powerful has been launched. As the web has evolved over time, allowing developers to create high-performance online apps, the moment has come to reward individuals who have worked hard to make this possible.

The Google Chrome team is well aware that they are only a small part of the success. As a result, they aim to help people understand the significance of this effort and encourage more individuals to collaborate on initiatives that strengthen the web as a platform for advanced apps. This includes web app developers and the people that help them create a robust ecosystem of APIs, tools, demo apps, and other resources.

To be considered, applicants must be working on a project that aims to “better the web as a platform for advanced apps.” While Google doesn’t have a specific definition for this, they note that it might be as basic as a website with a web-app interface and substantial client-side functionality.

The following are some examples of initiatives that might qualify: New capabilities (for example, a WebSQL replacement using WebAssembly). Libraries and tools that make it easier to build advanced web apps, such as improvements to Bubblewrap and drivers supporting WebUSB. Demo apps and tutorials showcasing unique or powerful use cases for advanced web apps.

To apply, an applicant needs an Open Collective account, which they may get by generating a brief proposal document. Existing projects can also be contributed by first creating a GitHub issue and then filling out this form.

Google claims that applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis, therefore there is no deadline for submitting projects.
