Google News Showcase launched in October 2020 and since then, they have signed deals with more than 1200 news publications around the world.

The News Showcase aims to connect readers to their local communities by showcasing local publishers and giving them a platform to explain important issues to readers.

Google has made an announcement on some added features they have released to support local news publishers.

One of the things that they are doing to make it easier to find local publishers in Google News Showcase is by bringing their panels into the local section of Google News.

Publishers under the Google News Showcase can choose their content to highlight for the local panels.

To check out the local section of Google news, tap the local section on the left sidebar of news.google.com or navigate to the local section of the For You feed in the Google News app.

Aside for the News Showcase, Google has also added a carousel of local news stories in Google Search whenever local news are available that are related to the search. This feature is available globally, and in all languages.

The ranking system has also improved so that relevant, authoritative local news sources can appear more often alongside national publications in the Top Stories section of the SERPs. Not only is the top section limited to authoritative and well-known national publications, even local publications can now show up more beside the big guns.

All these are added features to connect people to their local community, bring more awareness to local issues and matters, and to support local news sources and help them gain more exposure and readership.
