The October 6 episode of Search Off The Record is all about Image SEO. In the episode, Lizzi Sassman asked John Mueller what would be the first place to start when it comes to trying to get better with Image SEO and getting traffic from Google Images.
John responded that it is important to actually ask if it is a goal that is applicable to your site, do you need to be focusing on it, and does it even make sense for your site to focus on it?
If you have decided that it is applicable to your site, then think about your image search goals, think about what people would search for in a visual way to come to your website. This is something that you should always be thinking about when you’re working through SEO. It’s always tempting to just dive into the details without planning.
Another aspect John recommended is to focus more on what is already being found in web search. A way to do this is to check Search Console for pages that get the most impressions or those that get the most clicks. Use a crawler to run through your site and pull out all those without an alt text and then update those that have the most impressions and clicks, to start. This is a good place to start, especially if your site has a lot of images and you would like them to show up in image search.
Optimizing images on your site to show up in Image Search can indeed be quite daunting especially if you have a lot of images on your site, add to that the goal of showing up in the main search results for your target keywords. John’s advice on thinking strategically is helpful and useful. First, ask yourself, do you really need to show up in image search? Are your potential customers using image search?
