Google has been on a roll with their updates this year. One particular concern that some have mentioned though all the updates that have been rolled out is how there has been an increase of spam content ranking in the SERPs. Looks like Google is taking care of this and has released the October 2022 spam update. According to a tweet from Google Search Central, they will update the ranking release history page when the roll out is complete.
So what is a Google spam update?
According to Google, they have a system that automatically detects search spam that are constantly operating. They occasionally make improvements on how the system work in order to make detecting spam better. Whenever they do this, they call this a spam update.
As an example, SpamBrain is their AI-based spam-prevention system and from time to time, they improve it to make it better at spotting spam and to ensure that the system catches all types of spam.
Noticed a drop in your rank after the update? Best to review Google’s spam policies to make sure your site is not violating any of it as sites that violate the spam policies may rank lower or get deindexed (not appear in search). According to Google, making changes to your site to improve it and make sure it does not classify as spam may help improve the rank of the site if the automated system learns over a period of months that the site complies with their spam policies.
Looks like it would take months for sites to regain their rank after improvements as the automated system will be the one assessing if your site is complying with their policies. Best to always come up with quality content that are beneficial to visitors of your site. Spam does not benefit anyone at all, definitely not a site seeking to rank in the long term.
